ABUJA, August 4, 2025 — The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a fresh weather alert predicting widespread thunderstorms and heavy rainfall across several parts of the country beginning Monday, August 5, and continuing through Wednesday, August 7.
According to a forecast bulletin released on Sunday, NiMet warned that the anticipated weather pattern could trigger flash floods, reduce visibility, disrupt road traffic, and delay flight operations in affected areas. The agency specifically mentioned states in the North-Central, North-West, South-West, South-East, and South-South zones as likely to experience intense rainfall and thunderstorm activity during the period.
Residents in flood-prone and low-lying communities were advised to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures, including clearing drainage channels, staying indoors during heavy downpours, and avoiding contact with floodwaters. Motorists were also urged to drive cautiously and obey traffic advisories to minimise accidents.
NiMet’s warning aligns with seasonal rainfall projections indicating high precipitation levels between August and September, traditionally the peak of Nigeria’s wet season. The agency stated that urban centres with poor drainage systems could face increased flooding risks, particularly in cities like Lagos, Port Harcourt, Abuja, and Kano.
Emergency response agencies, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs), have been put on alert to respond swiftly to any incidents. NiMet reaffirmed its commitment to providing timely and accurate updates to ensure public safety and reduce the impact of extreme weather events.
The alert is part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to strengthen early warning systems in line with global climate adaptation strategies.
