Amorim Gives Update on Fitness of Onana, Martinez, and Mazraoui Ahead of Weekend Clash

As Manchester United prepare for their crucial Premier League fixture on Sunday, head coach Ruben Amorim has provided a medical update on three of his key players — goalkeeper André Onana, defender Lisandro Martínez, and full-back Noussair Mazraoui — whose fitness levels have been under close observation by the club’s medical team.

Speaking during his pre-match press conference at Carrington on Friday afternoon, Amorim addressed growing speculation surrounding the availability of the trio, who have all been managing various fitness concerns in recent weeks. The Portuguese manager, who took charge of the Red Devils earlier this summer, assured fans that progress is being made, but also stressed the need for caution as the club navigates a demanding fixture calendar.

Amorim confirmed that André Onana, who suffered a minor knock in training earlier this week, is recovering well and could be in contention for selection. The Cameroonian shot-stopper, who has been a regular starter since his arrival from Inter Milan last season, trained partially with the squad and is expected to undergo a final fitness test before Sunday’s encounter.

Regarding Argentine centre-back Lisandro Martínez — affectionately known as “Licha” by fans — the manager revealed that he is making steady strides in his rehabilitation. Martínez, who missed large chunks of last season due to recurring foot injuries, has been gradually reintegrated into team training. However, Amorim hinted that the medical staff may advise against rushing him back into competitive action too soon, given his recent injury history.

On the status of Moroccan international Noussair Mazraoui, Amorim explained that the defender has also returned to light training after experiencing muscle tightness during last weekend’s friendly. While his condition is not deemed serious, the coaching staff will monitor him closely before deciding whether he will feature in the matchday squad.

“We are assessing them daily, and while we want all our players available, we also have to make the right decisions based on medical advice,” Amorim stated. “It’s a long season ahead, and we cannot afford unnecessary risks.”
