The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a suspect who allegedly orchestrated the kidnapping of his own friend in a shocking case of betrayal and criminal conspiracy.
According to a statement by the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspect was apprehended following intelligence-led investigations that traced the kidnapping plot back to the individual, who was believed to be a close associate of the victim.
The incident reportedly occurred in Awka, the state capital, where the victim was abducted under suspicious circumstances. However, during the course of investigations, law enforcement uncovered evidence linking the arrested suspect to the planning and execution of the abduction.
“The suspect, who posed as a friend and confidant of the victim, lured him into a trap that led to his eventual abduction,” Ikenga stated.
He added that the police were able to track down the suspect after combing through phone records, surveillance footage, and other investigative leads. The victim was later rescued unharmed, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend other accomplices believed to be involved in the crime.
Commissioner of Police in Anambra, CP Obono Itam, condemned the act, describing it as a grievous breach of trust and a reminder of the changing nature of criminal tactics. He urged members of the public to remain vigilant, even among familiar faces.
The suspect remains in custody as investigations continue, with formal charges expected to be filed in the coming days.
