Argentina Crush Brazil 4-1 to Seal World Cup Qualification in Style

Argentina delivered a masterclass performance against arch-rivals Brazil, thrashing the Seleção 4-1 in a thrilling CONMEBOL World Cup qualifier at the Estadio Monumental on Tuesday night. The victory capped off a celebratory evening for La Albiceleste, who had already secured their place in the 2026 World Cup earlier in the day.

Dominant Display from the World Champions
Fresh off confirming their qualification—thanks to Bolivia’s 0-0 draw with Uruguay—Argentina played with freedom and flair, overwhelming Brazil from the outset. Julian Alvarez opened the scoring just six minutes in, latching onto Thiago Almada’s precise through ball before chipping a delicate finish over Brazil goalkeeper Bento.

The hosts doubled their lead six minutes later when Enzo Fernandez slotted home after Brazil’s defense failed to clear a low cross. Despite a brief lifeline for Brazil—courtesy of a Cristian Romero error that allowed Mattheus Cunha to pull one back—Argentina quickly extinguished any hopes of a comeback.

Alexis Mac Allister restored the two-goal cushion before halftime with a stunning first-time volley from Almada’s lofted pass. The second half saw further dominance, with Giuliano Simeone—son of Argentine legend Diego Simeone—sealing the win in the 71st minute with a sensational strike from a tight angle.

Argentina Qualify with Games to Spare

The victory ensures Argentina’s place at the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada with four qualifiers remaining. Lionel Scaloni’s side now sits atop the CONMEBOL standings with 31 points from 14 matches, while Brazil remains in fourth.

Elsewhere in South American Qualifiers

Ecuador held firm in second place after a 0-0 draw with Chile in Santiago, moving to 23 points.

Uruguay climbed to third on goal difference following their goalless draw against Bolivia and Brazil’s heavy defeat.

Colombia missed a chance to close the gap after squandering a 2-0 lead against Paraguay, settling for a 2-2 draw.

Venezuela kept their historic World Cup dream alive with a 1-0 win over Peru, moving into seventh and playoff contention.

What’s Next?
With qualification secured, Argentina will look to maintain momentum in their remaining fixtures, while Brazil faces pressure to rebound in a tightly contested race. Venezuela, meanwhile, remains in the hunt for their first-ever World Cup appearance.
