AU Commission Applauds DRC and Liberia on Election to UN Security Council, Joins Somalia to Represent Africa

The African Union Commission has expressed delight over the election of the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Liberia as non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2026–2027 term. The two nations will join the Federal Republic of Somalia to form the African Group known as the “A3,” collectively representing the continent on one of the world’s most influential decision-making platforms.

In a statement made available, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, His Excellency Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, congratulated both countries on what he described as a well-deserved recognition by the international community. He commended the transparent and credible processes that culminated in their election, adding that the outcome reflects growing confidence in Africa’s leadership on the global stage.

Chairperson Youssouf emphasized that the inclusion of DRC and Liberia in the Security Council comes at a crucial time when the continent’s contributions are increasingly indispensable in tackling evolving global peace and security threats. He stressed the need for the new African representatives to adopt a unified and strategic approach in pushing forward Africa’s common positions on key international issues, in line with the African Union’s peace and security architecture.

“The election of these two member states signals not only international trust in their diplomatic capability, but also the mounting recognition of Africa’s central role in shaping global peace efforts,” he stated.

Youssouf further remarked that as part of the A3 configuration, DRC, Liberia, and Somalia now bear the shared responsibility of defending African interests, promoting genuine multilateralism, and ensuring Africa’s voice resonates within the council’s deliberations. He noted that their task will involve articulating collective African positions on matters ranging from conflict resolution and peacekeeping mandates to humanitarian interventions and international justice.

The AU Commission also paid glowing tribute to the outgoing African members of the Security Council, acknowledging their exemplary dedication, strong advocacy, and principled stances during their tenure. The Commission described their service as instrumental in ensuring Africa’s concerns were given due attention at the highest level of international diplomacy.

Reaffirming its unwavering support for the incoming A3 members, the Commission pledged to maintain close collaboration with the new team as they prepare to assume their roles. Chairperson Youssouf restated the AU’s commitment to strengthening the continent’s influence in global governance, consistent with the values of Pan-Africanism and the aspirations outlined in Agenda 2063.

As Africa continues to push for equitable representation and reforms in multilateral institutions, the election of DRC and Liberia, alongside Somalia, to the UNSC stands as a testament to the continent’s growing diplomatic clout and its determination to shape a more inclusive and balanced world order.
