The inaugural edition of the Awori Unity Cup has officially commenced, marking the start of an exciting month-long football competition designed to bring together Awori communities from across Nigeria. The opening ceremony took place at the Lagos State University (LASU) Ojo Campus, featuring a vibrant display of culture and tradition.
His Royal Majesty, Oniba Ekun of Iba Kingdom, had the honour of performing the ceremonial kick-off, much to the delight of a spirited crowd that included traditional rulers, dignitaries, youth teams, and guests from various Awori communities across Lagos, Ogun, and beyond. The event saw an impressive turnout of respected Awori monarchs, such as the Oloja Ekun of Igbesa, the Olu of Oregun, the Agbaosi of Aguda Ogba, the Olu of Agboyi, the Alakesan of Akesan, the Olu of Ojodu, and the Olu of Mapara. Chiefs and community leaders from Awori settlements also attended, expressing their unwavering support for the tournament and its potential to unite the youth through sports.
The opening match between Igbesa United and Akesan FC was a thrilling start to the competition, setting the tone for what promises to be an action-packed tournament.
At the ceremony, the tournament’s convener and sponsor, His Royal Majesty Oba (Engr.) Sulaiman Adekunle Bamgbade, Ayodele III, Olofin of Isheri Olofin-Mole and Adimula of Awori Kingdoms Worldwide, expressed his pride in the event. He emphasized that the competition was not just about football, but about fostering unity, love, empowerment, and preparing the youth for greater roles in society.
“This is a moment of pride for all Aworis. This tournament is more than just football—it’s about building bridges, empowering our youth, and strengthening our cultural heritage,” the monarch stated, thanking fellow monarchs, partners, and the Awori Welfare Association of Nigeria for their support.
With 32 teams participating from various Awori communities, particularly from Lagos and Ogun States, the competition is set to run for a month, culminating in a grand finale at the LASU Sports Complex. The Awori Unity Cup is set to be a memorable event, celebrating the rich culture and spirit of unity among Awori people.
