Borno Governor Alleges Boko Haram Informants Among Politicians and Soldiers

Babagana Zulum of Borno State has revealed that Boko Haram insurgents have informants and collaborators within the ranks of politicians, soldiers, and local communities. He made the disclosure during an interview on News Central’s Breakfast Central programme.

Governor Zulum stressed the urgent need to strengthen intelligence operations to identify and deal decisively with those providing insider information to the terrorists. “We have informants and collaborators within the Nigerian armed forces, within the politicians, and within the communities. What we shall do is to strengthen our intelligence and to deal with them ruthlessly,” he said.

The governor also highlighted that defeating the insurgency requires more than military action alone, emphasizing the importance of addressing underlying social, political, and economic issues fueling the conflict. He called for a comprehensive approach that combines security efforts with community engagement and development.

On the issue of surrendered insurgents, Zulum stated that while not all have fully reformed, the majority have renounced violence and are being reintegrated into society. He expressed confidence that over 99 percent of those who have laid down arms are no longer involved in terrorist activities.

Governor Zulum further criticized the prevalence of “contractocracy” in the security sector and called for depoliticizing security matters. He urged President Bola Tinubu to prioritize intelligence gathering at the grassroots level and to listen more closely to professional military advice.

The governor’s remarks highlight the complex challenges confronting Nigeria’s efforts to end Boko Haram’s insurgency and underline the need for internal reforms and enhanced intelligence to break the terrorists’ support networks.
