A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ordered businesswoman Aisha Achimugu to appear before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegations of money laundering and related offenses.
Justice Inyang Ekwo, delivering the ruling on Monday, directed Achimugu to honour the EFCC’s invitation on Tuesday, April 29, 2025. The court also ordered her to report back before it on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, to confirm her compliance.
Achimugu, the Chief Executive Officer of Felak Concept Group, is being investigated by the EFCC for alleged conspiracy, obtaining money by false pretence, money laundering, and possession of properties suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities. According to court filings, the EFCC claims she operates 136 bank accounts across 10 commercial banks in Nigeria, held either personally or through her companies.
The investigation further revealed that Achimugu allegedly facilitated transactions amounting to N8.71 billion through her corporate accounts under the guise of investment funding for the acquisition of oil blocks. However, the anti-graft agency contends that the funds were funneled through bureau de change operators in cash, with no clear trace to legitimate business earnings.
In February 2024, Achimugu had honoured an earlier EFCC invitation and was granted administrative bail after submitting a written statement. However, she reportedly failed to return for further questioning, instead filing a fundamental human rights suit seeking to restrain the EFCC from arresting her.
The court, however, held that filing a rights enforcement action does not excuse a suspect from cooperating with ongoing investigations.
The EFCC has accused Achimugu of using legal proceedings to frustrate and obstruct the investigation process.
The case has been adjourned until Wednesday, when the court will assess Achimugu’s compliance with the order.
