Former NNPCL Boss Mele Kyari Reports to EFCC Over Fraud Investigation

Abuja, Nigeria – September 11, 2025

The immediate past Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, has reported to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) headquarters in Abuja following an invitation linked to ongoing investigations into alleged financial misconduct.
Kyari, who left office in July 2025, is being questioned by EFCC operatives over alleged irregularities during his tenure, including issues connected to the $7.2 billion refinery turnaround maintenance programme.
His appearance comes days after a Federal High Court in Abuja ordered the freezing of multiple bank accounts reportedly linked to him as part of the probe. Sources close to the investigation say Kyari is cooperating with investigators, though no official charges have been filed yet.
The EFCC has not issued a public statement on the scope of the questioning, but officials confirmed that the inquiry forms part of a broader effort to scrutinize major financial operations within the national oil company.
