Abuja, June 22, 2025 – Comptroller Onyeka of the Nigeria Customs Service has commended the Nigerian media for their vital role in supporting customs operations and called for stronger collaboration to enhance public trust, trade facilitation, and national security.
Speaking during a strategic media engagement in Abuja, the Comptroller emphasized that sustained collaboration with the media is key to promoting transparency, curbing misinformation, and showcasing the service’s ongoing reforms and achievements.
He noted that media reporting on customs’ successes in revenue generation, anti-smuggling operations, and community engagement helps strengthen the public’s confidence in the institution. “When you highlight our progress and challenges with accuracy, you’re not just informing the public — you’re reinforcing our mandate and improving national development,” Onyeka stated.
The Customs chief also encouraged journalists to step up their coverage of border activities, policy enforcement, and innovations being implemented to modernize the Service. He affirmed that the NCS remains committed to professionalism and integrity in all facets of its operations.
In response, media representatives at the session welcomed the initiative and pledged continued responsible reporting, while urging the Service to maintain openness and accessibility for effective communication.
The engagement ended with a mutual agreement to institutionalize regular interaction through press briefings, media tours, and joint training programmes aimed at strengthening journalistic understanding of customs procedures and national trade regulations.
By deepening its ties with the media, the Nigeria Customs Service, under Comptroller Onyeka’s leadership, is reinforcing its commitment to transparency, efficient service delivery, and robust border protection.
