Lagos, Nigeria | September 15, 2025 — Dangote Petroleum Refinery has flagged off its direct fuel distribution programme with the launch of 1,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered trucks, a move expected to reshape Nigeria’s downstream sector.
The trucks, valued at about ₦720 billion and imported from China, represent the first phase of a 4,000-truck fleet designed to deliver refined products directly to filling stations across strategic states, including Lagos, Abuja, Delta, Rivers, Edo, and Kwara. The company said the roll-out, initially slated for August 15, faced delays due to global shipping bottlenecks.
According to Dangote officials, the newly deployed trucks will immediately begin operations, with additional consignments set to arrive weekly to expand nationwide coverage in the coming months.
Industry stakeholders, including members of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), have expressed readiness to key into the new distribution model. However, they noted that final operational details are still under review.
Since commencing petrol production in 2023, Dangote Refinery has positioned itself as a game-changer for Nigeria’s energy sector. The new truck initiative is aimed at reducing transportation costs, stabilising supply, and potentially lowering pump prices in selected locations.
Analysts say the move could ease distribution bottlenecks that have long plagued the sector, while also aligning with Nigeria’s broader energy transition goals through the adoption of CNG-powered logistics.
