
ABUJA — The number of inmates on death row in Nigerian prisons has risen by 98 in just six months, from 3,590 in September 2024 to 3,688 in March 2025, marking a 2.73% increase.
The Acting Controller-General of Prisons, Mr. Sylvester Nwakuche, revealed this figure during his screening by the Senate Committee on Interior, Chaired by Senator Adams Oshiomhole.
He also highlighted the growing issue of prison overcrowding, with many inmates still awaiting trial.
Nwakuche called for greater collaboration between the Nigeria Police, Department of State Security, Economlc and Financial Crime Commission., and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission , for collaborative solution.
He sought the collaboration, with the focus on the wholistic reforms of the country’s Judicial System, prevention of unlawful arrest, arraignment and prosecution.
