Don’t dash the hope of Nigerians – Emenike

Former Super Eagles striker Emmanuel Emenike has urged the national team not to dash the hopes of Nigerians after their crucial 2-0 victory over Rwanda in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. 

The Super Eagles revived their qualifying campaign last Friday in Kigali, with Victor Osimhen’s brace securing a vital win under new coach Eric Chelle. After failing to win any of their first four matches, Nigeria climbed to fourth in Group C with six points, reigniting hopes of securing a World Cup berth. 

Emenike, who retired from international football in 2015, praised the team’s improved performance but warned against complacency as they prepare to face Zimbabwe on Tuesday. 

“From the games we played in the qualifiers, Rwanda was different,”* Emenike told journalists in Lagos. “They should keep up the momentum. Right now, everybody’s hopes are high, so they must not let the fans down. We expect them to beat Zimbabwe.”

Despite the win, Nigeria remains behind Group C leaders South Africa (10 points), Benin Republic (8 points), and Rwanda (7 points). A victory against Zimbabwe would take the Super Eagles to nine points, but their fate also depends on other group fixtures, including Benin vs. South Africa and Rwanda vs. Lesotho. 

Coach Chelle has enforced strict measures in camp, restricting access to visitors and journalists, as the team focuses on securing another crucial win. 

With the World Cup dream still within reach, Emenike’s message is clear: “Don’t dash the hope of Nigerians.”
