Dr. Hussaini Urges Embrace of Islamic Civilization and Interfaith Dialogue to Tackle Northern Nigeria’s Challenges

Associate Professor of Islamic Modern Development and Director of the Centre for Islamic Civilization and Interfaith Dialogue at Bayero University Kano (BUK), Dr. Taufiq Abubakar Hussaini, has called on Nigerians to harness the timeless values of Islamic civilization and interfaith dialogue as tools for addressing the growing socio-economic and security challenges, particularly in Northern Nigeria.

Speaking at a public engagement organized by the Centre, Dr. Hussaini emphasized that the rich cultural, intellectual, and ethical legacy of Islamic civilization holds viable solutions to modern issues such as poverty, insecurity, corruption, and intolerance.

“Islamic civilization is not just about history; it is a living system that promotes justice, economic fairness, peace, and responsible governance,” he said. “The values of honesty, trustworthiness, and social equity are deeply rooted in our Islamic heritage, and reviving these can help us solve many of today’s problems.”

He further stressed the role of interfaith dialogue in promoting national unity and peaceful coexistence among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic and religious communities.

“Both Islam and Christianity teach peace, good character, and justice. If we focus on these common values, we can build bridges instead of barriers,” Dr. Hussaini said.
“Let Christians practice Christianity and Muslims practice Islam, peacefully. Mutual respect and tolerance will allow us to grow economically and socially as a nation.”

Established in 2015, the Centre for Islamic Civilization and Interfaith Dialogue has become a leading platform for promoting understanding and cooperation across faiths in Nigeria. It has hosted numerous public lectures, scholarly workshops, and international conferences, featuring renowned Islamic thinkers and interfaith experts.

Dr. Hussaini highlighted that the revival of Islamic ethical values such as truthfulness, justice, and integrity is essential for fostering a more accountable society. He cited lessons from Islamic history and literature that advocate for virtuous leadership and community responsibility.

He concluded with a call for Nigerians, especially youth and policymakers, to reconnect with the enduring values of Islamic civilization and to actively engage in interfaith dialogue to build a more peaceful, prosperous, and united nation.
