The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned two Chinese nationals before a Federal High Court in Lagos over alleged involvement in illegal mining activities, signaling a renewed crackdown on foreign exploitation of Nigeria’s mineral resources.
The suspects, identified as Liu Kui and Wang Hai, were brought before Justice Mohammed Liman on multiple counts bordering on unlawful mining operations without proper licenses, in violation of Nigeria’s Mining Act and other regulatory provisions.
According to the EFCC, the duo was apprehended in the Ogun State axis, where they were reportedly engaged in unauthorized extraction and commercial sale of solid minerals without due process or approval from the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development.
Prosecuting counsel informed the court that the accused failed to provide legitimate documentation or permits authorizing their activities, thereby breaching the country’s environmental and economic laws.
The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges. Justice Liman ordered their remand in EFCC custody pending the determination of their bail application, and adjourned the matter to July 12, 2025, for further hearing.
This development comes amid growing concerns over the activities of foreign nationals, particularly from Asia, in Nigeria’s solid minerals sector. The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to regulating the industry, protecting local communities, and ensuring that all operators adhere strictly to Nigerian laws.
The EFCC continues to intensify efforts in curbing illegal mining, which has led to significant revenue losses for the country and contributed to environmental degradation in several mining belts across Nigeria.
