EFCC Presents Final Witness in N3.1 Billion Fraud Case Against Former Governor Gabriel Suswam

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has presented its ninth and final witness in the ongoing trial of former Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam, who is facing allegations of misappropriating N3.1 billion during his tenure.

The prosecution’s final witness, Mr. John Okpako, a forensic accountant with the EFCC, testified before Justice Ahmed Mohammed of the Federal High Court in Abuja. Okpako detailed the financial transactions and provided evidence linking the alleged misappropriated funds to personal accounts associated with Suswam.

According to the EFCC, the funds in question were diverted from the proceeds of the sale of shares owned by Benue State in various companies. The prosecution alleges that the money was laundered and used for personal purposes, including the purchase of luxury vehicles and properties.

During cross-examination, the defense counsel challenged the credibility of the forensic analysis, arguing that the evidence presented was circumstantial and lacked direct linkage to Suswam. The defense maintained that the transactions were authorized and conducted in accordance with due process.

Justice Mohammed has adjourned the case to June 25, 2025, for the defense to open its case. The outcome of this trial is being closely watched, as it is considered a significant test of Nigeria’s commitment to holding public officials accountable for corruption.
