EFCC Urges Enugu Students to Embrace Positive Online Habits

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has called on secondary school students in Enugu State to develop good online habits and steer clear of cybercrime and other internet-related offences.

The charge was given during a sensitisation campaign organised in partnership with the Nigerian Police and Comforting Africa, a youth-focused non-governmental organisation. The event took place at Oxford Secondary School, Obollo-Afor, in Udenu Local Government Area.

Speaking at the programme, Mr. Stephen Idoko, Head of the Cybercrime Unit at the EFCC South East Zonal Command, educated students on the dangers of internet fraud, identity theft, and online scams. He warned that the lure of quick wealth could destroy their future and urged them to focus on legitimate paths to success. He also advised parents to manage their expectations and avoid placing undue pressure on their children.

Enugu State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, also addressed the students, advising them to resist peer pressure and report suspicious or criminal activities to authorities. He said law enforcement agencies remain committed to protecting the future of Nigerian youths.

In an inspiring moment, popular music artiste and alumnus of the school, Sean Bukah, entertained the crowd and shared his story of perseverance and honesty. He pledged scholarships to deserving students and encouraged them to stay on the path of hard work and integrity.

Mr. Henry Ogwudu, manager of Comforting Africa, said the outreach was part of a wider effort to counter youth involvement in crime through value reorientation, empowerment, and awareness campaigns. He stressed that tackling the root causes of criminal behaviour among youths was essential for national development.

The EFCC recently intensified its clampdown on cybercrime in the South East, with over 50 suspected internet fraudsters arrested in Enugu in a separate operation. The commission says it will continue to blend enforcement with advocacy to reduce crime and guide the next generation toward productive futures.
