Enugu Electricity Distribution Company Reduces Tariff for Band A Customers to ₦160/kWh Starting August 1

ENUGU — In a move aimed at easing the financial burden on electricity consumers, the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has announced a downward review of its tariff for Band A customers, reducing the rate to ₦160 per kilowatt-hour. The revised tariff is scheduled to take effect from Thursday, August 1, 2025.

According to a statement obtained , the new rate reflects a reduction from the previous ₦206.80/kWh, marking a significant shift in EEDC’s billing structure for customers in the Band A category, who are entitled to a minimum of 20 hours of electricity supply daily.

The decision follows regulatory approval from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), which recently granted DisCos the discretion to review tariffs under certain economic and service delivery conditions. EEDC stated that the adjustment is part of its commitment to improve customer satisfaction and offer some relief amid growing concerns over energy affordability in the country.

Residents and businesses within the Enugu Disco’s coverage area — which spans across the South-East states including Enugu, Anambra, Ebonyi, Abia, and Imo — welcomed the development, although some called for more transparency and consistency in power supply to justify the charges.

EEDC further assured that it would continue to invest in infrastructure upgrades and distribution efficiency, particularly for feeders supplying Band A customers. It also encouraged customers to promptly report faults and supply disruptions to ensure better service delivery.

The review comes at a time when electricity pricing remains a sensitive issue in Nigeria, with citizens frequently voicing concerns over rising living costs and inconsistent power supply. While the revised tariff may offer temporary relief to some consumers, many stakeholders believe that broader reforms in the power sector are still needed to ensure long-term affordability, reliability, and accountability.
