The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has secured the conviction of Dennis Tamarakuro, also known by the alias Keisha Reynolds, for defrauding a United States-based non-governmental organisation, Pregnancy Support Network, of $71,795.41.
Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, Maitama, Abuja, delivered the judgment after Tamarakuro pleaded guilty to a one-count charge of cybercrime. Investigators established that he posed as a female investor to deceive the organisation and diverted the funds through cryptocurrency transactions.
The court sentenced him to one year in prison with an option of a ₦1 million fine. In addition, all recovered funds were ordered forfeited to the Pregnancy Support Network, while Tamarakuro must also swear an affidavit of good conduct.
According to EFCC officials, the conviction demonstrates the commission’s resolve to curb internet fraud, which has become a growing threat to Nigeria’s digital and financial space. The case further highlights how cybercriminals exploit online platforms to target unsuspecting foreign organisations, thereby damaging Nigeria’s reputation abroad.
The EFCC noted that ongoing operations are expected to bring more offenders before the courts as part of broader efforts to restore public confidence and protect victims of cybercrime.
This conviction underscores the judiciary’s support for anti-corruption agencies in enforcing accountability and strengthening Nigeria’s fight against financial crimes.
