A tragic road accident occurred on the Cele Expressway in Lagos, resulting in the death of one person and leaving several others injured. The incident involved a multi-vehicle collision, including a fully-loaded 40-foot containerized truck, five commercial buses, and two private vehicles—a Camry and a Sienna minivan.
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the accident was caused by a catastrophic brake failure of the heavy-duty truck, which was traveling at excessive speed. This led to the dislodgement of the containers, which collapsed onto the other vehicles, causing significant damage and human casualties.
One pedestrian lost their life in the accident, while two others sustained injuries. The injured were promptly evacuated by LASAMBUS to the General Hospital, Isolo, for medical treatment. LASTMA officials, along with the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority Response Unit and the Federal Road Safety Corps, responded swiftly to manage the situation and restore traffic flow on the expressway.
The incident highlights the importance of adhering to traffic regulations and maintaining vehicle safety to prevent such tragedies. LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and urged motorists to strictly follow speed limits and traffic rules.
In another incident reported on the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway at Cele Bus Stop, one person died and six others were injured in a separate accident involving seven vehicles. The cause of this accident was also attributed to brake failure of a MACK truck, emphasizing the need for regular vehicle maintenance and safe driving practices.
