The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has sealed off an unregistered organisation parading as a consumer advocacy body and arrested its operator for impersonating the Commission and misleading the public. The enforcement exercise took place on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at No. 214 Aba-Owerri Road in Aba, Abia State.
The entity, operating under the name Community Crime Prevention Initiative of Nigeria (CCPIN), was found to be unlawfully presenting itself as an authorised affiliate of the FCCPC. According to credible intelligence received by the Commission, CCPIN had been publishing deceptive notices and claiming to conduct surveillance activities in collaboration with the FCCPC, claims that were entirely false and unapproved.
Officials of the Commission, working closely with law enforcement agencies, moved in on the premises and effected the arrest of one Amb. Dr. Onwuka K. Okorie, who was identified as the head of the illegal outfit. He was apprehended at the scene and is currently in custody at the World Bank Police Station in Abayi-Aba, Abia State, where investigations are ongoing and prosecution processes are being initiated.
During the raid, several incriminating materials were recovered, including fake enforcement documents, public notices, and signage bearing the FCCPC name and logo, tools allegedly used to mislead unsuspecting members of the public into believing that CCPIN was legally sanctioned to operate on behalf of the Commission.
In a firm response to the development, the FCCPC disclaimed any association with CCPIN and reaffirmed that it does not license, endorse, or collaborate with non-governmental organisations or private individuals for enforcement or consumer protection activities unless formally empowered through legal instruments.
The Commission also clarified that it has no working relationship with CCPIN or any similarly named group, urging Nigerians to disregard any materials, campaigns, or public actions credited to the group. It reiterated that all legitimate consumer protection activities are conducted directly by FCCPC personnel or its formally designated agents, under strict legal protocols.
Emphasising its dedication to transparency and regulatory integrity, the FCCPC reassured consumers of its ongoing commitment to protecting their rights and ensuring that market practices are conducted within the framework of the law.
Members of the public are strongly advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious consumer protection claims or groups purporting to act on behalf of the Commission without verifiable credentials.
