FCCPC Warns Nigerians Against Dangers of Chemically Ripened Fruits

Abuja, August 28, 2025 — The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has issued a strong advisory to Nigerians, warning against the health risks associated with consuming fruits that have been artificially ripened with harmful chemicals.

The commission explained that some traders use substances such as calcium carbide to forcefully ripen fruits like mangoes, bananas, and plantains in order to meet market demand. According to experts, these substances contain toxic compounds that can cause long-term health complications, including cancer, liver and kidney damage, and digestive issues.

FCCPC Chief Executive, Dr. Adamu Abdullahi, urged consumers to be vigilant and adopt simple safety measures, such as thoroughly washing fruits and avoiding those with unnatural bright colors, unusual patches, or uneven ripening. He further stressed that traders caught engaging in the illegal practice would face stiff penalties, as the act violates both food safety laws and consumer protection regulations.

The commission also encouraged Nigerians to prioritize locally sourced, naturally ripened fruits, assuring that it is working closely with health authorities and food regulators to crack down on violators.

The warning comes amid growing concerns over food safety standards and the rising use of chemicals in Nigeria’s agricultural value chain.
