In a bold move set to boost Nigeria’s construction and industrial sectors, the Federal Government has successfully secured 200 hectares of prime land within the Lekki Free Trade Zone for the establishment of a state-of-the-art Building Materials Hub. The strategic acquisition forms part of a broader national effort to position Nigeria as a leading manufacturing and distribution centre for construction inputs in West Africa.
Situated within the rapidly developing Lekki axis in Lagos State, the Free Trade Zone is already home to several high-impact infrastructure projects, including the Lekki Deep Seaport and the Dangote Refinery. The addition of a dedicated hub for building materials is expected to significantly enhance local production capacity, reduce import dependency, and support large-scale infrastructure development across the country.
According to credible government sources, the initiative is being spearheaded through a public-private partnership model that will attract both local and international investors, while creating thousands of direct and indirect jobs. The hub will serve as a centralised marketplace and logistics base for cement, steel, tiles, roofing materials, plumbing supplies, and other key construction inputs—streamlining supply chains and lowering operational costs for real estate developers and contractors.
The move is also expected to stimulate trade volumes within the Lekki Free Trade Zone, which has been earmarked as a critical economic corridor under Nigeria’s industrialisation blueprint.
A regional platform tracking investment and development trends, have noted that this project could transform Lagos into a continental hub for building technologies and smart construction systems if effectively implemented.
Officials from the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment confirmed that land documentation processes have been concluded, with development plans already in advanced stages. The Federal Government has assured that enabling infrastructure—such as roads, power supply, and digital connectivity—will be prioritised to support seamless operations within the new industrial zone.
With Nigeria’s construction sector projected to grow by over 5% annually, driven by urbanisation, housing demand, and public infrastructure needs, the creation of a dedicated materials hub is widely seen as a timely intervention. It is anticipated to not only drive down the cost of building but also accelerate timelines for housing delivery and public works projects across the federation.
