The Federal Government has announced the successful delivery of 500 health-related projects across Nigeria within the past two years, as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen the nation’s healthcare system. This milestone was disclosed by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, during the commissioning of a newly built, state-of-the-art Cancer Centre at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) in Edo State.
Professor Pate described the newly commissioned Clinical Oncology Centre as one of three world-class cancer treatment facilities recently completed in the country, affirming the government’s determination to expand access to specialized healthcare services and reduce the burden of cancer-related deaths in Nigeria.
Speaking at the commissioning event, the Health Minister highlighted that the cancer centres—situated in Benin, Lagos, and Abuja—are equipped with advanced radiotherapy machines and diagnostic infrastructure that meet global standards. He noted that the initiative forms part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes universal healthcare delivery and significant investments in the health sector.
The Benin facility, according to Pate, is set to serve thousands of patients annually and will improve access to timely cancer diagnosis and treatment, especially for underserved populations. He emphasized that through strategic partnerships, public-private collaborations, and sustained federal investments, the government is working to transform healthcare delivery nationwide.
Pate reiterated that the over 500 completed projects include upgraded hospitals, primary healthcare centres, maternal and child health services, and infectious disease control interventions. He added that more efforts are underway to ensure the health sector becomes resilient and accessible to all Nigerians, regardless of location or economic background.
