The Federal Government has restated its determination to fast-track the Ogoni cleanup project, pledging to tackle decades of environmental degradation and restore the livelihoods of affected communities.
Speaking during a joint meeting of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) Governing Council and the Ogoni Trust Fund’s Board of Trustees, the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, said the administration remains fully committed to implementing all recommendations of the 2011 United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report.
According to him, progress has been recorded with the remediation of 36 polluted sites, commissioning of potable water projects across Ogoni communities, and the initiation of mangrove restoration. He emphasized the need for transparency, accountability, and stronger collaboration with local stakeholders to sustain the gains of the project.
The government pledged that ongoing efforts would not only clean up oil-polluted areas but also provide long-term economic opportunities, improve access to healthcare, and rebuild livelihoods in Ogoniland.
