FG Allocates 80% of New Telecom Towers to Northern Nigeria to Boost Connectivity

Abuja – The Federal Government has revealed plans to install 70,000 new telecommunications towers across Nigeria, with more than 80 percent of the sites designated for the northern region. This move is part of a wider effort to bridge the digital divide and improve access to quality internet services nationwide.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, who emphasized that prioritizing the North aims to foster greater digital inclusion in underserved communities. According to the Minister, the initiative aligns with the administration’s goal of making Nigeria the most inclusive digital economy in Africa.

Alongside the deployment of telecom towers, the government intends to invest in expanding the nation’s fiber optic infrastructure, targeting 90,000 kilometers of new fiber lines. These efforts are expected to enhance broadband penetration and support economic growth through improved digital infrastructure.

The rollout of the towers and fiber networks is slated to begin in the fourth quarter of 2025. The project is part of a comprehensive strategy to connect remote and rural areas, creating opportunities for education, business, and government services through reliable telecommunications.

Experts have welcomed the initiative, highlighting its potential to transform socio-economic dynamics in the North and across Nigeria. The government remains committed to ensuring that no community is left behind in the country’s digital transformation journey.
