FG Approves ₦46.39 Billion for Malam Aminu Kano International Airport Upgrade

Abuja, August 1, 2025

In a renewed drive to boost Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure, the Federal Government has approved the sum of ₦46.39 billion for the comprehensive upgrade of Malam Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano State.

The approval was granted during the latest Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

According to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, the allocated funds will be directed toward the full refurbishment of the airport’s runways and taxiways. The project is part of the federal government’s broader commitment to modernizing critical aviation infrastructure across the country.

Keyamo noted that the upgrade would enhance operational safety, increase passenger capacity, and improve compliance with international standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

“Malam Aminu Kano International Airport serves as a vital gateway for Northern Nigeria and a major route for pilgrims, traders, and tourists. This upgrade will ensure the airport meets modern operational standards and becomes more efficient and attractive for both domestic and international airlines,” Keyamo stated.

The project, he said, would be executed in phases to minimize disruption to airport activities, with a clear emphasis on safety and engineering excellence. It also includes installing advanced lighting systems, surface drainage improvements, and reinforced pavement structures to withstand increasing aircraft load.

The airport, named after the revered Nigerian statesman, Malam Aminu Kano, is one of Nigeria’s oldest and busiest airports and serves as a critical hub for the northern region. The upgrade is expected to open new economic opportunities and further integrate Kano into the global air transport network.

With this development, the federal government continues to demonstrate a strategic focus on strengthening Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure as a catalyst for economic growth, regional connectivity, and international competitiveness.
