FG Commissions Five Landmark Health Projects at FMC Abeokuta to Bolster Tertiary Healthcare

In a decisive move to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare delivery system, the Federal Government has commissioned five key infrastructure projects at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The commissioning, which took place on Saturday, May 24, 2025, underscores the government’s commitment to revitalizing tertiary healthcare institutions across the country.

The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, who presided over the ceremony, described the development as a reflection of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, aimed at improving access to quality healthcare for all Nigerians.

The projects include a 68-room office complex for consultants, a newly constructed Works and Maintenance Department building, a modern laundry unit, and an expanded ward section with an additional 180 beds. The infrastructure, designed to boost clinical efficiency and enhance patient care, also serves administrative and operational support roles vital to the hospital’s functioning.

To honour notable Nigerians who have contributed immensely to the health sector and national development, some of the commissioned buildings were named after Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun, former Governor Chief Olusegun Osoba, and former NSCDC Commandant Dr. Ade Abolurin.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Salako noted that the projects were part of ongoing reforms within the health sector. He revealed that under the current administration, 12 new tertiary health institutions have been established nationwide, alongside the recruitment of over 15,000 health professionals into 61 federal hospitals.

“These projects are not just structures; they are symbols of our resolve to reduce the physical and financial burdens Nigerians face in accessing healthcare,” Salako said. “However, infrastructure alone is not enough. We must also ensure our hospitals deliver excellent clinical outcomes and humane experiences for every patient.”

The Minister further announced that the government plans to establish two functional Primary Health Centres in every electoral ward by 2027, as part of its decentralised healthcare initiative to strengthen grassroots access.

He also commended the outgoing Medical Director of FMC Abeokuta, Professor Musa Olomu, for his visionary leadership and transformational efforts during his eight-year tenure, noting milestones such as the elevation of the hospital to teaching status and its successful performance of advanced procedures, including open-heart surgeries.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by dignitaries from the health sector, traditional rulers, and community leaders, all of whom praised the Federal Government’s continued efforts toward achieving universal health coverage in Nigeria.
