The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Monday, March 31, and Tuesday, April 1, 2025, as public holidays to mark the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations. This was disclosed by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement issued on behalf of the Federal Government.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo congratulated the Muslim faithful across the country for the successful completion of Ramadan, a month dedicated to fasting, prayers, and spiritual reflection. He emphasized that Eid-el-Fitr is not only a time of celebration but also an opportunity to reinforce values of piety, charity, and community service, which are central to Islam.

Call for Unity and National Development The Minister further called on Nigerians, regardless of religious affiliations, to use this period to pray for national peace, economic recovery, and sustained security across the country. He highlighted the need for citizens to embrace unity and work together to overcome the challenges facing the nation.

“As we celebrate this significant religious event, let us remember that Nigeria’s strength lies in its diversity. We must continue to foster love, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence among ourselves, as these are the bedrock of national unity and progress,” he stated.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo also urged Nigerians to extend kindness to the less privileged, reminding the public that Eid-el-Fitr symbolizes generosity and compassion. He encouraged affluent individuals to support those in need, particularly in the current economic climate where many families are facing financial difficulties.

Security Measures and Government Preparedness In light of the celebrations, the Federal Government has assured citizens of adequate security measures to ensure a peaceful holiday period. Security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), have been placed on high alert to maintain law and order across the country.

The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the safety and well-being of all Nigerians, urging citizens to cooperate with security personnel and report any suspicious activities during the festivities.

Advisory for the Public While the public holidays provide an opportunity for rest and celebration, the government advises Nigerians to observe safety precautions, especially in crowded places and while traveling. Essential services such as healthcare, emergency response, and security operations will remain functional throughout the holiday period to cater to public needs.

The Federal Government extended warm wishes to the Muslim community and all Nigerians, hoping for a joyful and peaceful Eid-el-Fitr celebration.
