FG Declares October 1st Public Holiday in Honour of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Wednesday, October 1st, 2025, as a public holiday to mark the nation’s 65th Independence Anniversary. The announcement, made through the Ministry of Interior, is in line with the government’s tradition of observing the day Nigerians gained freedom from British colonial rule in 1960.

As the country prepares to celebrate over six decades of sovereignty, the declaration serves as both a symbol of national pride and a moment for reflection on the journey so far. Nigeria, which became an independent nation on October 1, 1960, has since grown into Africa’s most populous country and one of its largest economies, with vast cultural diversity and a rich political history.

According to the government, the holiday is meant to give citizens across the federation the opportunity to reflect on the struggles of the nation’s founding fathers, celebrate the progress made over the years, and renew their commitment to national unity, peace, and development. Citizens are encouraged to mark the occasion peacefully and in a manner that upholds the spirit of patriotism and unity.

While official programmes are expected in Abuja and state capitals, the public holiday also offers Nigerians in both the public and private sectors a chance to engage in commemorative activities, cultural displays, and community gatherings that highlight the country’s resilience and achievements.

The 65th Independence Day celebration comes at a time when the country continues to face numerous challenges—from economic restructuring and youth unemployment to security concerns and calls for deeper governance reforms. Yet, the federal government remains optimistic that through collective effort, the country will continue to grow stronger and more prosperous.

As Nigerians prepare to hoist the green-white-green flag once again, the government urges citizens to continue promoting values of tolerance, accountability, and nation-building.
