Abuja, July 3, 2025 — The Federal Government has inaugurated a new committee tasked with setting strategic direction and ensuring that the governance of Nigeria’s federal tertiary institutions aligns with national laws and international standards.
The formal inauguration took place on July 1, 2025, in Abuja, and was presided over by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa. In his remarks, the Minister reiterated the government’s firm commitment to revitalizing tertiary education through investments in infrastructure, solar energy, improved campus power supply, staff welfare, and access to quality education.
Dr. Alausa emphasized that the committee’s establishment must be accompanied by strict accountability and transparency in key areas such as procurement, budgeting, and contract awards. “University autonomy must be balanced with transparency and responsibility,” he said, warning that the government will not hesitate to act against breaches of trust in institutional management.
He charged the newly appointed committee members to work collaboratively with university leadership—particularly Vice-Chancellors, Rectors, and Provosts—while maintaining supportive but non-intrusive oversight. He described their selection as based on proven expertise, dedication, and experience, underlining that their role is a matter of national importance.
Also speaking at the event, the Minister of State for Education, Professor Sulaiba Said Ahmad, congratulated the appointees and described their selection as a significant step in the journey to reinforce governance and accountability within federal tertiary institutions.
The inauguration marks a crucial milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to reposition its higher education system in line with global best practices while ensuring that quality, accessibility, and integrity remain at the forefront.
