FG Receives 147 Vulnerable Nigerian Returnees from Niger Republic

Abuja — The Federal Government of Nigeria has received 147 vulnerable Nigerian returnees from the Republic of Niger, in a coordinated repatriation effort aimed at addressing irregular migration and providing humane reintegration for affected citizens.

The returnees, who include women, children, and elderly persons, were received on arrival in Kano by officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and other relevant agencies. The movement was facilitated under the framework of voluntary repatriation and humanitarian assistance.

Speaking during the reception, the Coordinator of NEMA in Kano, Dr. Nuradeen Abdullahi, stated that the returnees had been stranded in Niger while attempting irregular journeys to North Africa and Europe through the Sahara Desert. Many were reportedly exposed to harsh conditions, exploitation, and other forms of vulnerability before intervention efforts secured their safe return.

“We commend the efforts of IOM and the support from the European Union for making this return possible under the Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration (AVRR) programme,” he said.

Medical screenings, psychological support, food, and essential relief materials were provided to the returnees upon arrival, alongside profiling for reintegration planning.

One of the returnees, speaking anonymously, narrated her ordeal in Niger, expressing deep gratitude for the opportunity to return home. “I never imagined I’d come back alive. I thank everyone who made this possible,” she said tearfully.

This development highlights the growing concern over irregular migration and the need for increased awareness, empowerment, and livelihood opportunities for young Nigerians who often fall prey to human trafficking and dangerous journeys in search of greener pastures.

Authorities reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safe and dignified return of stranded Nigerians abroad, while encouraging citizens to pursue legal and safe migration routes.
