FG Targets 4 Million Tonnes of Green Ammonia Yearly by 2060 to Boost Clean Energy, Fertilizer Output

The Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled an ambitious plan to produce four million tonnes of green ammonia annually by the year 2060, as part of its broader strategy to promote clean energy and strengthen local fertilizer production.

Speaking during a stakeholders’ forum on sustainable development in Abuja, Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Uche Nnaji, disclosed that the initiative forms a critical component of Nigeria’s long-term energy transition plan. He explained that green ammonia, derived from renewable sources, will serve as a key alternative fuel while also enhancing agricultural productivity through its application in eco-friendly fertilizers.

According to the Minister, the project will be implemented in partnership with global investors, research institutions, and private sector stakeholders. The roadmap, he noted, will include the establishment of modern production plants powered by solar and wind energy across strategic locations in the country.

“This is not just about reducing carbon emissions,” Nnaji said. “It’s about driving inclusive growth, creating green jobs, and making Nigeria a leader in the global clean energy space.”

Experts at the forum described the plan as timely, noting that green ammonia is gaining international relevance as a sustainable energy carrier, especially for industries and maritime transport.

The initiative aligns with Nigeria’s commitment under the Paris Agreement and the African Union’s Agenda 2063. It also supports President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda by fostering technological innovation, energy security, and climate resilience.

Implementation is expected to begin in phases starting in 2026, with the Ministry assuring continuous engagement with industry players to ensure the success of the ambitious target.
