The Federal Government has announced plans to launch the STEMM Up Grant (S-VCG), a groundbreaking initiative aimed at supporting student-led innovation and entrepreneurship in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
Designed to nurture creative thinking and problem-solving among young Nigerians, the STEMM Up Grant, short for Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine Venture Creation Grant, will provide financial backing to promising student projects and business ideas with transformative potential.
The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, disclosed the upcoming launch during a press briefing in Abuja, noting that the grant initiative reflects President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to repositioning Nigeria’s education system as a driver of economic growth and technological advancement.
“The STEMM Up Grant is not just a funding programme. It is a bold national step to encourage ingenuity, foster job creation, and equip students with the tools to become solution providers and future industrial leaders,” the Minister said.
According to officials, the grant will be open to students across universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education, with a structured application and evaluation process involving innovation hubs and academic mentors. Successful applicants will receive funding, mentorship, and incubation support to scale their ideas into viable ventures.
Education stakeholders have hailed the initiative as a timely response to the growing demand for practical, innovation-driven education that aligns with 21st-century global standards. They believe the grant will also help reduce graduate unemployment by empowering students to become job creators.
The STEMM Up Grant is expected to roll out in phases beginning later this year, with pilot programmes already being considered in select institutions.
