Firefighters Rescue Mother, Baby from Ilorin Blaze

The Kwara State Fire Service successfully rescued a middle-aged nursing mother and her one-year-old child from a fire incident at their residence in the Awolowo area of Tanke, Ilorin South Local Government Area, Kwara State on Thursday.

According to reports, the woman and her child were asleep when their residence caught fire. They were alerted by the commotion of neighbors who noticed smoke emanating from the building. A resident, Mr. Owolabi, raised the alarm and promptly contacted the Kwara State Fire Service.

Hassan Adekunle, the Principal Fire Officer and Head of Media and Publicity of the Fire Service, stated that they received an emergency call about the fire at approximately 1:45 PM on Thursday.

“On Thursday, March 20th, 2025, at about 13:44 hours, the Kwara State Fire Service received an emergency alert regarding a fire outbreak at No. 8 Aiyegbede Street, Awolowo, Tanke, Ilorin,” Adekunle said. “The fire crew responded immediately and swiftly commenced firefighting operations upon arrival.”

The affected building was a two-flat residential structure, comprising a three-bedroom flat and a two-bedroom flat. Fortunately, only the sitting room of the two-bedroom flat sustained fire damage.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the fire was first noticed by Mr. Owolabi, who promptly alerted other residents. Thanks to their quick response, a mother and her child, who were asleep at the time, were rescued unharmed. The incident was traced to a power surge,” Adekunle explained.

The fire resulted in the destruction of furniture, electronics, and decorations in the sitting and dining rooms.

Prince Falade John, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, expressed his sympathy to the affected residents and emphasized the importance of fire safety precautions in homes and commercial establishments.

He also commended the residents for their bravery in assisting the victims and encouraged the public to remain vigilant and support each other during emergencies.
