Flood Disrupts Access Ahead of President Tinubu’s Strategic Visit to Benue

Lafia–Makurdi Road, Benue State | June 18, — 2025
Severe flooding has disrupted vehicular movement along the Lafia-Makurdi Road, a critical route linking Nasarawa and Benue States, ahead of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s scheduled visit to Benue.

Motorists and commuters were left stranded for hours as torrents of floodwater rendered portions of the highway impassable, causing traffic congestion and logistical delays. Eyewitnesses reported that heavy rainfall, which began in the early hours of the day, led to the overflow of nearby rivers and drainage systems, submerging key sections of the road.

The development has sparked concern over the state of road infrastructure in the region, especially given the strategic importance of the President’s visit. President Tinubu is expected to inspect ongoing federal projects and engage with state officials on matters of infrastructure, security, and economic revitalization.

Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigerian Police, and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) have been deployed to manage the situation and provide support to affected travelers. However, as of press time, no diversion route had been officially provided.

Stakeholders have called for urgent intervention by the federal and state governments to address the recurrent flooding challenge and ensure such critical national visits are not hampered by preventable infrastructural setbacks.

President Tinubu’s media team has yet to issue a statement regarding any potential change in his itinerary.
