Formula 1 is in advanced discussions to add a Grand Prix in Bangkok, Thailand, as early as 2027 or 2028, Kiin Media has learned. The proposed street circuit would wind through the heart of the Thai capital, marking F1’s latest push to grow its presence in Southeast Asia.
Thai government officials and F1 executives have held preliminary talks about the project, which aims to leverage the sport’s soaring global popularity to boost tourism and economic activity. A source close to the negotiations confirmed the event would likely coincide with Thailand’s biennial motor show, blending racing with automotive industry promotion.
The move aligns with F1’s strategy of targeting key markets, including recent additions like Miami, Las Vegas, and a forthcoming race in Madrid. Southeast Asia has become a focal point, with existing races in Singapore, Japan, and China. A Bangkok GP would position Thailand as a regional hub, capitalizing on the country’s motorsport enthusiasm and infrastructure investments.
However, challenges remain. Urban street circuits require extensive planning to meet F1’s safety standards, and local concerns about traffic disruption and environmental impact could complicate approvals. Bangkok’s notorious congestion and monsoon season also pose logistical hurdles.
Thailand’s Prime Minister has publicly endorsed the idea, calling it a “unique opportunity to showcase Thai culture and innovation.” Meanwhile, F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has repeatedly emphasized the sport’s ambition to “explore new destinations while respecting tradition.”
If finalized, Bangkok would join Vietnam’s postponed Hanoi GP (shelved due to political issues) as part of F1’s Southeast Asian vision. Further details, including track layout and financial commitments, are expected by late 2024.
