OSOGBO — Fountain University, Osogbo, is celebrating a remarkable academic milestone as one of its distinguished alumni, Dr. Habeeb Olufowobi, has been awarded a prestigious $250,000 research grant by the University of Texas, Arlington, to spearhead the development of innovative Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions aimed at early detection of heart-related complications.
Dr. Olufowobi, who graduated from the Computer Science Department of Fountain University, has risen to international prominence for his pioneering work in the intersection of healthcare and machine learning. The newly secured grant will support his ongoing research in designing intelligent tools capable of predicting cardiovascular diseases before they become life-threatening, a breakthrough that could transform global healthcare practices.
Reacting to the development, the Vice Chancellor of Fountain University, Professor Olayinka Ramota Karim, expressed immense pride in the alumnus, describing the achievement as a validation of the university’s commitment to academic excellence and innovation.
“This recognition underscores the high standard of education and research culture we have built at Fountain University,” Prof. Karim stated. “Dr. Olufowobi’s groundbreaking work reflects the caliber of talent we produce and our enduring contribution to solving real-world problems.”
The AI project, according to research notes from the University of Texas, will focus on developing predictive algorithms that help medical professionals detect early signs of cardiovascular disease, enabling timely medical intervention and potentially saving thousands of lives annually.
Health experts have hailed the research initiative as a major leap toward personalised medicine, particularly in Africa and other parts of the world where cardiovascular diseases are a growing concern but often go undetected due to lack of early diagnostic infrastructure.
Dr. Olufowobi expressed gratitude to both institutions for the support and reaffirmed his commitment to using technology for social good. “I am humbled by this opportunity and fully committed to ensuring that this project delivers meaningful impact in the area of public health,” he said.
The announcement has stirred excitement within the Fountain University community, with students, faculty, and alumni commending the global recognition accorded to the institution through Dr. Olufowobi’s achievement.
The University, in an official statement signed by the Public Relations Officer, Mr. Taoheed Alimi, congratulated Dr. Olufowobi and noted that the feat would serve as a beacon of inspiration to current students and young African researchers.
The breakthrough reinforces Fountain University’s vision of nurturing global change-makers and cements its position as a breeding ground for world-class innovators contributing to sustainable development.
