The Gateway Games 2024 officially commenced today in Ogun State with a grand opening ceremony that brought together a distinguished gathering of national leaders, state governors, federal ministers, sports icons, and revered traditional rulers—all united in celebration of youth, unity, and excellence through sports.

Held in a charged and jubilant atmosphere, the opening ceremony marked a defining moment in Ogun’s sports history and reaffirmed the state’s place at the forefront of youth development and grassroots sports empowerment in Nigeria.

The Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Kashim Shettima, GCON, graced the occasion on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and officially declared the Games open. His presence underscored the Federal Government’s strong commitment to fostering national pride, excellence, and cohesion through sporting initiatives.

“This event speaks to the heart of our national vision—a Nigeria where our youth are empowered, talent is nurtured, and excellence is celebrated. On behalf of the President, I declare the Gateway Games 2024 open,” the Vice President proclaimed to resounding applause from the crowd.

Also present were prominent governors from across Nigeria, including Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo of Kogi State; Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State; Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State; and Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State. The Deputy Governors of Delta and Akwa Ibom States—Monday Onyeme and Senator Akon Eyakenyi respectively—also joined in the celebration, signaling nationwide support for the initiative.

The Federal Government’s economic leadership was equally represented, with the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, affirming the economic potential of investing in youth and sports development. “Sports is not just recreation—it is enterprise, discipline, and opportunity. Ogun State is setting an example that other states must emulate,” he remarked.

The event also witnessed the presence of revered statesmen and Ogun’s illustrious sons—Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Former Governor Aremo Olusegun Osoba—whose legacies in leadership and national development continue to inspire new generations of Nigerians.

Members of the National Assembly from Ogun State, top-ranking officials, royal fathers, sports legends, and thousands of enthusiastic supporters filled the venue, making the event not only a celebration of sports but also a showcase of the state’s unity and hospitality.

In his address, the host governor expressed profound appreciation to the dignitaries in attendance and reaffirmed the state’s unwavering dedication to empowering its youth through sustainable policies, infrastructure development, and deliberate investment in human capital.

“Today, we reaffirm our commitment to a future where talent is discovered and nurtured, where hard work is rewarded, and where Ogun State continues to lead as a beacon of excellence in Nigeria’s development story,” he said.
