Ghana Orders MultiChoice to Slash DStv Subscription Fees by 30% or Risk License Suspension

ACCRA, August 4, 2025 — The Government of Ghana has issued a directive mandating MultiChoice Ghana, the operators of DStv, to immediately reduce its subscription fees by 30 percent or risk having its operational license suspended.

This development follows growing public complaints about escalating costs of pay-TV services and what many Ghanaians describe as unaffordable access to digital satellite television. The National Communications Authority (NCA), in a notice issued over the weekend, confirmed that MultiChoice must comply with the pricing adjustment within seven days or face regulatory sanctions, including the possible revocation of its license to operate in Ghana.

According to the NCA, the decision was made after a comprehensive review of market practices and a public hearing that highlighted significant discrepancies between the economic realities of Ghanaian consumers and the current fee structure maintained by DStv. Authorities also cited the lack of flexibility in package offerings and billing irregularities as key concerns.

In response, industry analysts noted that the move signals a stronger stance by Ghanaian regulators to protect consumer rights and ensure fairness in the broadcast service industry. The ultimatum comes amid wider calls across West Africa for stricter oversight of pay-TV platforms and the need for localized pricing models that reflect domestic economic conditions.

MultiChoice Ghana has yet to issue a formal response to the directive. However, sources within the company suggest internal consultations are ongoing to evaluate the implications and formulate an appropriate course of action.

The NCA has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting competitive pricing and has urged other digital service providers to review their tariffs in line with consumer affordability. The outcome of this regulatory standoff could set a precedent for similar actions across the region, where digital television remains a vital source of information and entertainment for millions.
