Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, has boldly predicted that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is on the verge of turning Kaduna into a one-party state, following a wave of high-profile defections from opposition parties and a string of people-oriented projects sweeping across the state. Speaking in Zaria on Monday at an event organized by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, Governor Sani asserted that the APC’s dominance is now unassailable, with the party poised to consolidate its grip on the state in the coming months.
The governor’s confidence is rooted in recent political developments that have seen about four members of the House of Representatives and several members of the Kaduna State House of Assembly, all from opposition parties, cross over to the APC. “This is a good sign and shows that we are doing something positive. We are carrying everyone along in Kaduna State,” Sani declared, emphasizing that the mass defections are a testament to the inclusive and progressive governance style of his administration.
Governor Sani attributed the APC’s growing appeal to his administration’s commitment to justice, fairness, and equitable distribution of resources, regardless of party affiliation or ethno-religious background. He noted that the party’s open-door policy has made it attractive to politicians seeking to align with a government that prioritizes the welfare of all citizens. “Someone who joins APC today and the one who has been a foundation member 10 years ago, they are of the same status. They will enjoy the same rights and privileges,” he assured, sending a clear message of unity to both old and new members.
The event also witnessed Speaker Abbas distributing 117 vehicles—including Hilux vans, ambulances, buses, Sharon vehicles, and sedans—alongside 200 tricycles (Keke NAPEP) and 1,000 motorcycles to beneficiaries across the state. Governor Sani heaped praises on the Speaker, describing him as a pride to Kaduna and the nation at large. He highlighted the Speaker’s role in attracting numerous development projects to Zaria and other parts of the state, particularly in education, healthcare, and agriculture, which have touched lives beyond his immediate constituency.
Political analysts in Kaduna have described the ongoing defections as a “political tsunami,” especially in Southern Kaduna, where bigwigs from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) have joined the APC. Insiders attribute this mass exodus to the APC’s perceived strength at both state and national levels, as well as the desire of politicians to be part of the ruling party and influence policy decisions. However, some civil society voices have cautioned that unchecked dominance by one party could threaten accountability and good governance, urging the need for robust checks and balances.
Governor Sani’s prediction comes at a time when the main opposition, PDP, is grappling with internal challenges, and his estranged predecessor, Nasir El-Rufai, has defected to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), further weakening the opposition’s base in the state.
With the APC’s strengthened position, Kaduna is set for a new political era, and all eyes are on Governor Uba Sani to see how he will leverage this advantage to deliver on his campaign promises and maintain the trust of the people. As the political landscape shifts, the people of Kaduna are watching closely, hopeful that the new wave of unity and development will translate into tangible benefits for all.
