ICPC, South-East Attorneys-General Forge Stronger Anti-Corruption Alliance in Enugu

ENUGU, July 17, 2025 — In a strategic move to enhance Nigeria’s fight against corruption, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) convened a high-level meeting with Attorneys-General from the South-East region in Enugu, aimed at fostering closer collaboration and promoting preventive approaches to curbing graft.

The meeting, which brought together key legal and anti-graft officials, was centered on aligning prosecutorial strategies and reinforcing institutional synergy in line with President Bola Tinubu’s renewed call for accountability and ethical governance.

Chairman of the ICPC, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, who led the commission’s delegation, stressed the critical importance of inter-agency cooperation. “Synergy is not optional, it’s essential,” he declared, noting that state-level justice institutions must work hand-in-hand with federal agencies to effectively detect, deter, and prosecute corruption cases.

According to Dr. Aliyu, the collaboration seeks not only to streamline investigative and judicial processes but also to shift focus toward proactive anti-corruption measures such as public education, transparency enforcement, and internal controls within government agencies.

The Attorneys-General from the South-East states echoed the sentiment, expressing readiness to partner more deliberately with the ICPC. They agreed on the need for uniform prosecutorial standards, shared intelligence, and timely legal reviews that would enhance the success rate of corruption-related cases.

The meeting concluded with a joint resolution to institutionalize a framework for regular engagement between the ICPC and state legal departments. The initiative is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s broader anti-corruption architecture by deepening cooperation between federal and state entities, particularly in the prevention of abuse of public office and the protection of public resources.
