The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has summoned the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, for questioning in connection with a violent incident that occurred during the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations in Kano.
The incident, which took place during the Sallah festivities, led to the death of a vigilante member, Surajo Rabiu, and left another, Aminu Suleman, injured. Suleman was immediately rushed to Murtala Mohammed Specialists Hospital in Kano for treatment. The violence reportedly occurred when local vigilantes were providing security for the Emir’s entourage after the Eid prayers at the Kofar Mata prayer ground.
According to the Kano Police Command spokesman, SP Abdullahi Haruna, the police have arrested one Usman Sagiru in connection with the attack on the Emir’s procession. Sagiru is accused of being involved in the fatal attack that claimed Rabiu’s life.
In response to the incident, the IGP has instructed the Emir to attend an investigative meeting at the Force Intelligence Department (FID) in Abuja. The letter, signed by CP Olajide Ibitoye, was issued on behalf of the Deputy Inspector General of Police at FID. It invites Emir Sanusi to appear at the FID office, opposite the Police Force Headquarters in Area 11, Abuja, on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, at 10:00 AM.
The letter reads: “I have the directives of the Inspector General of Police, through the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Force Intelligence Department (FID), to invite you for an investigative meeting regarding an incident that occurred during the Sallah celebration within your domain. Your availability is highly sought for a purposeful investigation.”
The invitation has drawn significant attention, as the violent episode is being investigated within the broader context of security concerns in Kano.
