Northern Governors Condemn Plateau Attacks, Call for Unity and Stronger Security Measures

The Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) and Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Yahaya, has strongly condemned the recent attacks on communities in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, including Ruwi, Manguna, Daffo, Josho, and Hurti. The violent incidents have reportedly resulted in several deaths and left many others injured, with women and children among the most affected.

In a statement issued from Gombe by his Director-General of Press Affairs, Ismaila Misilli, Governor Yahaya described the killings as senseless and as a serious threat to the unity and stability of the region. He expressed his deep sorrow over the tragic events, offering condolences to the families of the victims, as well as the people and government of Plateau State.

“The spate of violence plaguing rural communities in the North, particularly the ongoing shedding of innocent blood, is a stain on the conscience of our region and the nation at large,” Yahaya lamented. He emphasized the importance of upholding the sanctity of human life, saying that such brutal attacks on innocent people are wholly unacceptable and must be condemned by all.

The Gombe State governor also commended Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang for his swift and effective response in addressing the aftermath of the attacks, as well as the prompt intervention of security agencies to restore calm to the affected areas.

However, Yahaya urged security forces to intensify their efforts in tracking down those responsible for the violence and ensuring they face justice.

Additionally, he called for greater tolerance, peacebuilding, and mutual understanding, particularly between farmers and herders who are often involved in conflicts in the region. Yahaya reiterated the commitment of the Northern Governors to collectively address insecurity, foster social cohesion, and promote harmonious coexistence throughout the region.

“As Northern Governors, we will continue to take deliberate steps to break the cycle of violence by strengthening security collaboration, promoting dialogue, and implementing policies that encourage peace and unity,” he stated.

The governor further appealed to community leaders, religious groups, and civil society organizations to support government efforts by actively promoting peace, tolerance, and forgiveness, stressing that no meaningful development can occur in an environment of violence and fear.

This condemnation of the Plateau attacks underscores the Northern Governors’ ongoing commitment to restoring peace and security in the region while urging all stakeholders to collaborate in the pursuit of long-term solutions.
