INEC Decries Low Voter Turnout as Only 1,801 Register in Enugu CVR Exercise

Enugu, Nigeria — September 16, 2025

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has expressed concern overv what it described as low participation in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise in Enugu State.
Chief Rex Achumie, Head of Voter Education and Publicity at INEC Enugu, disclosed that only 1,801 fresh registrations were recorded during the first 15 days of the in-person CVR, which ran from August 25 to September 12, 2025. Of this figure, 896 were males and 905 females.
The online pre-registration for the exercise commenced nationwide on August 18, while in-person registration followed from late August across registration centres in all 17 local government areas of Enugu State.
Achumie noted that there were no technical or logistical challenges with the exercise, stressing that the turnout of eligible voters remained the major concern. He urged community leaders, civil society, and the media to intensify awareness campaigns to encourage new registrants, particularly those who have just turned 18 or missed earlier opportunities.
INEC reiterated its commitment to ensuring an inclusive voter registration process ahead of future elections.
