Abuja, June 21, 2025 – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has applauded Nigeria’s strides in advancing migration governance and strengthening disaster preparedness mechanisms, citing the country’s evolving framework as a model for inclusive and forward-looking policy development.
The commendation came during a courtesy visit by a delegation from IOM, led by the Chief of Mission in Nigeria, Sharon Dimanche, to Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The visit highlighted ongoing collaboration between Nigeria and IOM in addressing the intersection of migration, displacement, and humanitarian crises.
Vice President Shettima, while receiving the delegation, emphasized the urgent need for comprehensive and practical solutions to the country’s growing humanitarian challenges, particularly in regions affected by conflict, climate change, and forced migration. He underscored the government’s determination to pursue policy reforms that prioritise human dignity, national security, and socioeconomic inclusion.
“There is a pressing need for a unified approach to address the intertwined challenges of migration, poverty, and environmental disruption,” the Vice President said. “Our government is committed to building resilient communities through pragmatic policies and global partnerships.”
The IOM Chief of Mission commended Nigeria’s leadership in embracing global standards on migration management, disaster risk reduction, and community reintegration. She also acknowledged the significant efforts made in the North-East and other vulnerable regions, while expressing IOM’s readiness to deepen cooperation with Nigeria in addressing emerging migration dynamics.
Both parties agreed to scale up joint efforts in key areas such as the reintegration of returnees, support for internally displaced persons (IDPs), community stabilisation, and climate resilience initiatives. They also discussed the need to enhance data collection, strengthen border management, and promote safe, orderly, and regular migration pathways.
The meeting reinforced Nigeria’s standing as a key partner in regional and international migration policy dialogues and reaffirmed IOM’s long-term commitment to supporting the country in delivering inclusive, sustainable, and human-centered migration and disaster response systems.
