The Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia has officially announced that Thursday, June 26, 2025, marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year 1447 AH, following the confirmed sighting of the crescent moon on the evening of Wednesday, Dhul Hijjah 29, 1446 AH.
According to the Saudi Press Agency, the Crescent Sighting Committee verified credible reports of the moon’s appearance, leading to the declaration.
The statement also included prayers for and emphasized a message of Muslim unity in the coming year.
In Nigeria, the Sultan of Sokoto and the National Moonsighting Committee confirmed the same date for Muharram 1st, 1447 AH. The National Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) released a statement via its official platform shortly after midnight, confirming:
“The crescent for the new Islamic year and the month of Muharram was SEEN today.”
Significance of Muharram
Muharram, the first month of the Hijri (Islamic) calendar, holds profound spiritual importance in Islam. It is one of the four sacred months during which warfare is traditionally forbidden. The month is often referred to as “Shahrullah al-Muharram”, (“The Month of Allah”), a title that reflects its sanctity and reverence.
Historically, the Islamic calendar began with the Hijrah (migration) of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE. This pivotal event marked the establishment of the first Islamic community and the beginning of a new chapter in Islamic history.
Muslims around the world observe Muharram with increased worship, reflection, and acts of charity. The 10th day of Muharram, known as Ashura, is especially significant for both Sunni and Shia Muslims, commemorating events such as the salvation of Prophet Musa (Moses) and the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA) in the Battle of Karbala.
As the Ummah welcomes 1447 AH, the new year offers an opportunity for renewal of faith, gratitude, and unity among Muslims globally.
