Jerusalem, June 19, 2025 – Israeli defence officials are reportedly evaluating the possibility of launching a commando operation targeting Iran’s heavily fortified Fordow nuclear facility, should advanced bunker-busting bombs prove insufficient to neutralize the underground site.
The Fordow plant, buried deep within Iran’s mountainous terrain and reinforced to withstand conventional aerial assaults, has long been viewed by Israeli intelligence as a core component of Tehran’s suspected nuclear weapons programme. Concerns have escalated in recent weeks over increased uranium enrichment activity and stalled diplomatic efforts to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
According to security sources familiar with the matter, Israeli military planners are exploring multiple scenarios, including a direct special forces raid, should diplomatic and surgical airstrike options fail. The potential operation would involve elite Israeli units tasked with infiltrating and disabling the nuclear complex with precision.
While Israel has not officially commented on the specifics of any planned strike, senior defence officials have reiterated that all options remain on the table to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons capability. Tel Aviv has long maintained that a nuclear-armed Iran poses an existential threat and that time for preventive action may be narrowing.
The Fordow site’s deep-buried design has made it a particularly challenging target. Although the United States has developed next-generation bunker-buster munitions capable of penetrating hardened facilities, it remains unclear whether such weapons have been shared with Israel or would be effective without close operational coordination.
