In a swift and decisive response, the Kebbi State Government has officially denied shocking statistics about homosexuality and lesbianism allegedly presented by one of its senior officials, calling the figures completely fabricated and without merit.
The controversy erupted when Dr. Nasir Kigo, the Permanent Secretary of the Cabinet Office in Birnin Kebbi, reportedly announced during an Islamic gathering that Kebbi State harbours over 15,000 registered homosexuals and more than 18,000 lesbians. These startling figures quickly spread across social media platforms, causing significant public concern.
Governor Nasir Idris has personally intervened in the matter, categorically rejecting the claims following what he described as a thorough investigation. “After careful examination, the government has determined these statistics are entirely false,” the Governor declared. “We strongly urge members of the public to disregard this information as it has absolutely no factual foundation.”
The Governor did not mince words regarding potential consequences, indicating that appropriate disciplinary action would be taken against the official responsible for circulating these unverified statistics.
According to reports, Dr. Kigo’s controversial statements extended beyond Kebbi State. During his sermon, he allegedly referenced what he called a “census on homosexuality,” claiming that neighbouring Sokoto State had 9,978 registered homosexuals purportedly ranking it second nationwide and 10,456 lesbians, supposedly making it third in the country. These additional claims have been met with widespread skepticism.
The Kebbi State Government has emphasized its firm commitment to ensuring only accurate information reaches the public, warning strongly against the dissemination of misleading data that could potentially trigger unnecessary social tension and division within communities.
