LAGOS, August 4, 2025 — The Lagos State Government has launched a stern crackdown on event centres responsible for obstructing public roads and causing traffic gridlocks, as part of its ongoing efforts to maintain order and improve urban mobility.
In a statement released by the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, authorities emphasized that event centres must comply with traffic management regulations by ensuring proper parking arrangements and avoiding the illegal occupation of roadways during events. The crackdown follows complaints from commuters and residents about frequent disruptions caused by guests parking indiscriminately along major roads and streets during high-profile events.
Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, stated that the government is committed to addressing the growing challenge of event-related traffic congestion, especially in high-density areas like Ikeja, Lekki, and Surulere. “We will not allow event centres to compromise the flow of traffic or public safety. Operators must take responsibility for providing adequate parking and ensuring that their events do not disrupt normal city operations,” Osiyemi said.
The Lagos Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will be intensifying its monitoring efforts and penalising event organisers who fail to comply with the new guidelines. This includes the possibility of fines, temporary closure, or suspension of operations for non-compliant venues.
The move is part of the Lagos State Government’s broader plan to address urban congestion and improve the efficiency of public spaces. Authorities have urged event organisers to adopt proactive measures to minimise traffic disruption, such as arranging shuttle services or using designated parking areas.
